The Good News First
Here is something many travellers do not know. As a Japanese citizen, you can rent a self drive car in India. You do not need an Indian driving license. You do not need to pay a guide to book a car for you. You do not need to go through a travel agent who adds their own commission.
All you need is the right documents and a little preparation.
According to the rules, visitors from countries that are part of the 1949 Geneva Convention can drive legally in India with an International Driving Permit (IDP) and their home country license. Japan is part of this convention. So you are good to go.
